๐ Mile high club
If you're the kind of person who's been there and done that, we've got a brand-new experience for you โ dining and drinking 15.5 miles above the Earth in space, minus the zero gravity. Zephalto, a French travel company specializing in low-carbon balloon travel, is set to launch luxury trips into the stratosphere in 2025. ๐ Uber Eats your leftovers
Ever have that sinking feeling of forgetting something or someone in an Uber? You're not alone. Last week, Uber released its annual Lost & Found Index, which included some very interesting grocery items. In the food category, a crab, leftovers, saltine crackers, packets of sugar, chicken fettuccine alfredo, and eggs were at the top. For beverages, riders chose to relive their college days in the backseat of an Uber with a case of 5-Hour Energy, Moรซt Champagne, and Fireball whiskey topping the list.
๐ฅ No more gas
New York wants all its aspiring chefs to stay grounded. On Tuesday, it became the first state to approve a requirement for all-electric stoves, sparking controversy. The ban (going into effect in 2026) applies to all new residential buildings and some commercial ones (restaurants, hospitals, and crematoriums are exempt). While proponents believe this ban will help New York meet its greenhouse gas emissions goals, others are heated up against the bill citing increased energy costs.
Burrito peddler
Like a perfectly wrapped burrito, Chipotle is on a roll! The burrito peddlerโs shares hit a record high last week after they reported first-quarter results that beat analystsโ expectations, tacking on some $7 billion in market value. The companyโs stock has increased nearly 21% in the last 12 months and almost 30% in 2023.
For the number geeks
Here are some of the highlights of the companyโs Q1 earnings report (FYI: they make for a pleasant reading):
Earnings per share were $10.50, beating the predicted $8.92.
Revenue was $2.4 billion, higher than the predicted $2.34 billion.
Net income grew from $158.3 million in 2022 to $291.6 million in Q1 2023.
Canโt get enough burrito bowls
So what is it about Chipotle that has investors in a state of queso coma, competitors guac-ing and customers lining up for burrito bowls?
Price increase: Charge more and see what happens. Thatโs what Chipotle did in response to historic inflation. By passing inflationary costs onto consumers, Chipotle was able to absorb expenses without compromising quality.
Target audience: Chipotle is like the cool kid at school who manages to be both high-end and down-to-earth. As inflation hits, they're cashing in on their wealthy fans who are slumming it by dining at Chipotle, ditching their usual white tablecloth haunts.
Avocados: Chipotle uses roughly 4.5 million cases of avocados each year โ enough guac to make the Statue of Liberty dip her torch in it! Lower avocado prices (down 18% since last year) have helped the companyโs margins by offsetting higher costs for other items such as oils and tortillas.
TikTok: The companyโs results were also lifted by a new TikTok trend, the fajita quesadilla, that went viral after two TikTokers posted their version of the newfangled quesadilla. This led to two top sales days for Chipotle.
What next?
An understandably buoyed Chipotle predicts continued sales growth in Q2 and the full year. The company expects comparable sales growth to move from the mid to high-single-digit range and plans to open 255 to 285 new restaurants this year.
However, as our crystal ball isnโt as clear as the Chipotle execsโ, we can only wait and watch where the ceiling for this burrito chain lies.
Cho chweeet!
When George Washington ruled the land, the average American consumed ~6 lbs of sugar per year. That number has now risen to ~160 lbs per year, roughly 3500 lbs over an individualโs lifetime. During Prohibition, soda surged in popularity and Americans never stopped drinking it, with or without rum.
Why the increase?
Sugar rush: Sugar's just so darn addictive! It releases those feel-good chemicals in our brains, making the Energizer Bunny inside us crave more and more!
Sweet deal: Sugar prices have plummeted faster than a skydiver without a parachute, making it easier for companies to sprinkle it into everything from soft drinks to cereals.
Ignorance: Some folks just don't realize the amount of added sugar in their favorite snacks and drinks.
Sugar, sugar everywhere!
Condiment con: Ketchup, barbecue sauce, and salad dressings are sugar's BFFs. It makes them tastier and even more addictive.
Tricky treats: Flavored yogurts, cereals, and granola bars often pretend to be the holy grail of health but are loaded with large amounts of sugar, making them more like a teenager with a fake ID to enter a bar.
Juicy deceptions: Whole fruits and veggie smoothies are often loaded with honey or agave nectar, making them sugar bombs. Similarly, a glass of OJ has the same amount of sugar as 4-6 oranges.
Suggestions for reducing sugar consumption:
Swap out the soda:ย Water is the best and free alternative. Consider seltzers if youโre looking for some healthy excitement.
Substitute: Switch out sugar with unsweetened applesauce in recipes.
Read labels: Carefully read labels and pay attention to the serving sizes.

Cutting on the countertop isnโt the smartest idea. Sure, it might save a minute or two from grabbing the cutting board, but it'll also dull your knife faster than a sitcom that's overstayed its welcome.
Transform a sad and scabby bagel into a pillowy delight using the"Nuke and Spa Treatment". Simply wrap the bagel in a moist towel and microwave it for 10-15 seconds.
To prevent potatoes and eggplants from looking like they're auditioning for a role in a zombie movie, soak them after cutting to avoid discoloration.
